The Killing of Kashmir

I will soon learn that security forces and militants will take whoever they want, torture and kill them. In the middle is Kashmiri. More than 60,000 people, mostly innocent civilians, have been killed in the 15-year conflict. Half a million Indian troops are stationed in Kashmir to fight Pakistan-funded militants who sneak across the border to attack troops while intimidating the local population into offering them protection and aid.

While both governments talk about peace, Unreported World shows little has changed on the ground. For villagers, life is a cycle of armed violence and state repression. The team arrived in Srinagar to find that Indian police had just brutally beaten a group of women protesting against the detention of two men and a woman on suspicion of links to pro-Pakistan militants.

The sisters told Jordan that about 25 masked soldiers from the special operations team broke through the windows and grabbed their father, mother and uncle. The children fear their parents will join the 8,000 people international rights groups say have “disappeared” after being taken away by security forces over the past 15 years.
