A close friend of Nick Polizzi told him he had Parkinson’s disease. He set out to find out if there were any natural remedies that could cure Parkinson’s disease, since there was no cure for it with medication. He found that tracing back the origin of Western medicine, more than 25% of its active ingredients come from the Amazon rainforest.

Then he began to wonder what else is in the Amazon forest? There are more than 44,000 species of plants, and to his surprise, he found that only 1% of the 44,000 plants had been studied by scientists for their medicinal properties. He turned to noted ethnobotanist Mark Plotkin, who said: “If we think of the Amazon rainforest as an encyclopedia of medicinal plants, the indigenous herbalists are certainly an index in the catalog.”

On one of their initial research trips, Nick met a man named Roman. When Roman was 12, he was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. For ten years, he tried all the conventional methods available to get rid of it, but nothing worked. At 22, he said goodbye to his family and traveled to the Amazon jungle in search of a shaman to work with. Within 5 months, all symptoms of his Crohn’s disease disappeared. Roman had the opportunity to stay and learn the ancient traditions of Amazonian shamanism. For the past 10 years he has spent the past 10 years honing his craft working with Aboriginal medicine personnel in the bush.

If Nick told you that your grandfather had pancreatic cancer, that your daughter was clinically depressed, or that your wife had severe gastric adhesions, there is one last unexplored option…but there is a Problem – you have to have it all behind you. You have spent 30 days in seclusion somewhere in the world, home to a vanishing group of indigenous healers who are said to know about undiscovered herbs and plants found only in uncharted parts of the Amazon rainforest. October 2010, from Eight people around the world chose this option. Five will return with real results, two will return disappointed, and one will not return at all. This is her story.
