The Winter of the Beard

In the fall of 2005, two filmmakers invited six men from across the United States to conduct an experiment. They both stopped shaving for six months. Trimming is not allowed. Each is equipped with a video camera and weekly interview questions to document their own experiences. The resulting 600 hours of intimate footage shows a group of people traversing the same ritual from different vantage points.

Throughout, the men share stories from their pasts, share likes and dislikes, and confess personal fears and desires. They laughed and cried and came back to life hiding behind their beards.

The relentless recordings document the bad days and the good times, and it is within this framework that personal stories come to the fore and mustaches take a backseat.

From a son struggling with his father’s Alzheimer’s disease, to financial and marital woes, to the birth of his child, Beard Winter reveals the trials and tribulations of changing his appearance and moving on.
