The Yin and Yang of Gerry Lopez is a fascinating film about the life and career of Gerry Lopez, a pioneer of modern surfing and one of the most influential figures in the sport. The film examines Lopez’s life, his influence on surf culture, his connection to the natural environment and his commitment to protecting the planet. It also delves into his philosophy of balance and harmony, how these principles shaped the way he surfs and his overall outlook on life. This is another film produced by Patagonia, an outdoor adventure clothing company known for its passionate commitment to environmental and social responsibility.
From the start, Gerry Lopez seemed destined to become a surfing star. He was born in Hanalei, Hawaii, in 1915, the son of a veteran Internet user and a strong swimmer mother. He grew up with direct access to the beach, watching surfers perfect their craft. Although he started surfing at a young age, he didn’t get hooked on surfing until much later, when he was attending college in California. From then on, he was hooked, completely immersed in surf culture, and it would become a true love that would last a lifetime.
Lopez quickly earned a reputation as a skilled, stylish and slightly aggressive surfer. He started competing and soon found himself winning them all, being on the cover of surf magazines and starring in surf documentaries that were popular in the late ’60s and early ’70s. He was known as “Mr.” Pipeline,” as he was one of the first surfers to conquer the famous break of Banzai Pipeline on Oahu’s North Shore, and in the years that followed he conquered more challenging waves around the world.
He also discovered yoga early in his career and is known for incorporating it into surfing. He claims practicing yoga has improved his flexibility, balance and strength, and has helped him develop mental clarity, focus and the ability to remain calm and composed under stress.
But in addition to really surfing, Lopez also created high-quality surfboards and made significant contributions to the design and construction of modern surfboards. He began shaping surfboards in the 1970’s and quickly gained a reputation for crafting functional as well as beautiful boards known for their precision, attention to detail and superior craftsmanship. His innovative approach to surfboard design also had a major impact on the industry by experimenting with new materials and construction techniques. Today, the Lopez Lightning Bold surfboard remains the most sought after by surfers and professionals worldwide and is recognized as one of the best in the industry.
Many were surprised by his sudden move to Colorado in the 1990s to raise his family. However, this did not affect his love for the sport. Gerry is also learning to snowboard like a duck to water. Today, at 74 years old, Gerry Lopez is still healthy, surfing and inspiring thousands.
