Numerous unauthorized video titles have been released about the life of rap superstar Tupac Shakur. Tupac: Resurrection is the only one to both be executive produced by his mother, former Black Panther Afeni Shakur, and benefit from access to the MTV archives. This documentary is the feature-length debut of director Lauren Lazin, creator of several top-rated shows for MTV and PBS.
Using voice-overs, interviews and other audio tracks recorded by the late artist himself, the film examines his life, music and the circumstances of his death from fatal gunshot wounds in 1996. Includes rare footage, home videos, private photographs and his private poems, excerpts from magazines and letters.
During filming, MTV reached out to its fanbase by asking for submissions of Tupac memorabilia used in the film. C’mon America 2003 featured 13 live performances by eight-time Grammy winner Sheryl Crow. The episode included over two hours of footage, including the #1 hit “All I Wanna Do” and the top 10 hits “Everyday Is a Winding Road,” “Leaving Las Vegas” and “If It Makes You Happy.”
